Doctor Who Series 7, Episode 4 Review: The Power of Three

Updated: Feb 23

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

I didn't notice it as much this time around, but I remember it feeling weird being on modern day Earth, it had felt like we hadn't been there in a very, very long time. So was The Power Of Three's a refreshing trip to our time, or a stick to bash Chibbers with, find out in this review.

Poor old Chris Chibnall doesn't get a whole lot of love does he? The two episodes in this series are also thrown into the mix when people are going at him, but I think that is highly unfair. Dinosaurs and Three are two of the better episodes of series 7 in my humble opinion.

"We have two lives. Real life and Doctor life. Doesn’t feel like real life gets much of a look-in."

Having been drawn in to Doctor Who again by RTD and his take on the show, it felt comforting to be back on Earth and seeing some family life unfold. Mark Williams as Brian is inspired, and every scene he is in is delicious. It is such a shame that we didn't get more of him from the beginning of this era - Moffat's Jackie Tyler if you will.

Imagine the fun we could of had?

With all that said - we get to the part I don't like, and that is UNIT. I don't get them? They are shit at what they do and made out to be this super-duper organisation. I find the Kate stuff a bit twee as well, we get it, the Brigadier is a bit of a legend, I don't need it rammed down my throat thank you very much!

I am grumpy, I know. But in my defence I have good reason. The Shakri could chuck a load of cubes down now and make the world a better place. There are so many awful fuckers here!! I am becoming more and more frustrated with life, feeling helpless and the people who need us most are shit on, used as pawns to make billionaires richer. It is a vile place, and the sooner we all stood up to these egotistical, greedy fuckers the better!! Release those cubes!!!!!!

"Ah. It’s not little, it’s important to me. What you do isn’t all there is."

Back to the episode, and the bits that stand out are the deep dives into the emotional impacts of adventures with the Doctor by the Ponds. Now I have never fully been brought into the Pond fan club - I always thought Amy was horrendous to Rory and in turn, I thought Rory was a bit wet and their for comic relief without being all that comic relief-y.

Chucking Brian in the mix though makes Rory shine, and I am thinking about what could have been again! Brian Williams is such a great character, filled with warmth, humour, and a kind of wisdom that is just the right amount. His simple reactions to the Doctor's chaotic world are both lovely and funny all at the same time.

I believe there are reasons for the ending being a bit rushed, namely that the Shakri actor was a bit of a dick. It is a shame as it is literally a wave of the magic wand sonic that saves the day. I kind of got the vibe that the Shakri could of been a great villain as well.

So all in all a good episode with some amazing moments but a rushed ending.

RATING: Good!

BEST LINE: "Because you were the first. The first face this face saw. And you were seared onto my hearts, Amelia Pond. You always will be. I’m running to you, and Rory, before you fade from me."
