Lets paint the picture, I walk into a room in my house, and it's not just any room, oh no - it's a sanctuary. The air inside is fresh, no half eaten plates of meals, no random socks scattered over furniture, no hair grips dangerously lurking on the floor. What I see is shelves lined with immaculate LEGO sets, the Disney castle there, the Batmobile straight ahead, is that the Avengers Tower proudly standing tall? Yes it is! There are drawers, lots of drawers, open them up and I find perfectly sorted bricks, every piece and colour you can think of. I see a huge table lit by a bright light, a comfy chair parked in front of it. Welcome to the LEGO room of my dreams, and let it be said, it is just that, a dream, and a far off one at that!!
These are the steps I need to take, treading very, very carefully so as not to upset any family members along the way. It is just a fantasy of course - but it's good to dream isn't it?
STEP 1: CLAIMING THE SPACE
Much like an animal I will prowl the house ready to mark my territory! This will be by far the hardest part of my fantasy room (potentially impossible). Lets just say I imagine up a spare bedroom in the house! Intentions will be announced - "This will be my LEGO room!" I am pretty sure the imaginary spare bedroom will be something the wife has her eye on though, a room filled with throws and cushions in case someone stays the night. Hell no, I just said it will be my LEGO room, I shotgunned it!!
STEP 2: THE PERFECT LAYOUT
Tough luck guys, the room is mine now, so now I need a good layout. This won't be carnage, this will be beautiful.
First up I need a table, and a bloody big one at that. This has to be just right though, I don't want the table filling up the whole room do I? Under the table are my many drawers and then there is the comfy chair. I don't think even my fantasy room will stop the backache after a long build session, but maybe I will find the one that limits some of that pain.
The walls will be full of shelves, sturdy ones for those hefty bigger sets. There's a stand displaying some minifigures and a stand for the BrickHeadz, maybe two of each come to think of it. There are framed movie posters on the wall, all the classics, Back to the Future, Mary Poppins, My Cousin Vinnie, Indiana Jones...
An Alexa sits on the desk ready to play the Doctor Who Series 6 Original Soundtrack. A built in wardrobe houses all those pesky unbuilt sets.
STEP 3: THE BIG SORT
Not a fun job, maddening in fact, but needs must. This is crucial to the room, all those pieces need sorting, every last one of them. In the perfect room they would be sorted by piece and colour, but I think I will just go by piece to save me completely losing my mind.
No more trips to the loft for the big box to be tipped into one gigantic pile on the floor. No stray hairs in the bricks, no random pieces of plastic, no food, just perfect sorted LEGO in its correct place.
Just imagining drawers labelled with specific parts has me kind of excited.
STEP 4: LIGHT IT UP
Any dream LEGO room needs good lighting. No more squinting, no more having to get up to check a plate is the right colour under the better bathroom light.
I'm thinking overhead lighting, LED lighting, a handy lamp on the desk. I'm thinking sets with lights, glowing on their shelves. Let there be light!!!!
STEP 5: LOUNGING AROUND
Now this imaginary room is big, big enough for all the above and a lounge area. Only a little cosy one, nothing major. Somewhere to sit back and admire the well lit little pieces of art. Maybe somewhere to have a morning coffee at the weekend.
So a little sofa, with a little drawer to the side full of Dairy Milks.
STEP 6: THE RULES
Oh there will be rules, I know LEGO is meant to be fun, but in my LEGO room that fun will be monitored.
The rules will be simple, no bloody touching. Don't touch the sets, don't nab my Dairy Milks, and under no circumstance can anyone else mess with my organised drawers.
STEP 7: SHOWING THE ROOM OFF
Who am I kidding, nobody outside the house is allowed in!!
CONCLUSION: IT'S MUCH MORE THAN JUST A ROOM
It is living the dream. A pipe dream I grant you, but pipe dreams can come true right? Until then, I'll keep dreaming...and adding more sets to the wardrobe!!
