What did you think of these episodes?
Sonic!
Good!
Bumpy-wumpy!
Exterminate!
Now this is more like the Doctor Who I am a fan of.
I would like to say off the bar that even though some episodes don't do it for me I am always in awe of how writers like RTD come up with so many ideas. Not all work of course but boy what a brain. How many stories has he wrote now? It also doesn't come as a surprise having written so many that a few things crop up that ring some bells.
Having not that long ago been gripped by The Legend of Ruby Sunday I was quite surprised how similar the cliffhanger to The Impossible Planet was to it. As the Ood listed other names for The Beast all I could think about was Harriet. It's almost identical but for listing names for the devil as opposed to Sutekh. The increasing tension, the shit hitting the fan more and more, oh this was so Russell T Davies, and I love it!!
“This lump of rock is suspended in perpetual geostationary orbit around that black hole without falling in. Discuss.”
There's still something about Rose I just don't like, it runs through the whole series and crops up a number of times here. Maybe I just enjoyed a more naïve but brave portrayal from the first series, but she always comes across as a bit of a know it all at times. Am I just an old fuddy duddy? Probably! I know Rose and Ten is a very big hill that a lot of people will die on, but I just don't get it!
That aside though these are awesome! The cast is superb, usually Doctor Who has a weak link or two, but not here.
Will Thorp does a great job of being a possessed MF as well. The scene where he stands outside the station smiling, beckoning at Scooti is both brilliant and fucking terrifying!! Her death is so well done, I love how they think they have found her but then they see her floating towards the black hole, I am not sick, I just love stuff like this, alright maybe I am sick then!!
I also really liked Danny, I thought he was a great character. His time has passed now but I would of loved for him to crop up now and again in the show.
How good was the Beasts laugh at the cliffhanger to The Impossible Planet?! Very good is the answer.
“Well that’s… ood.”
The Ood are probably the first real iconic Nu-Who monsters - even though they aren't even monsters! They look amazing, and the red eye and acting as one was very freaky.
This episode also had the chance to slow the pace down with some good old chats. The Doctor and Rose getting a mortgage for example. However the chat I loved the most was between the Doctor and Ida as they contemplated going into the pit. Go on! Go on. Go on. Go over, go on! Lovely stuff, not my words, the words of Shakin’ Stevens!
“If I destroy the prison, your body is destroyed. Your mind with it. But then you’re clever enough to use this whole systen against me. If I destroy this planet I destroy the gravity field. The rocket. The rocket loses protection, falls into the black hole. I’ll have to sacrifice Rose.”
David Tennant excelled at the end of this two parter. It was great watching the Doctor work things out, his brain ticking over as he talked through traps and Gods, and then finally believing in Rose as he sent the planet heading into the black hole.
Billie was amazing as well, her despair at losing the Doctor, then her horror of sitting next to Toby losing his shit, and finally saving the day with what appeared to be a staple gun!
Wins all round!!
