Doctor Who Series 1 (14), Episode X Review: The Church on Ruby Road

Updated: Jul 25

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

Oh they are good aren't they? I don't think I have been this excited about the show for a long old time!!! Hello Ncuti and Millie!!!!

Christmas specials are never the greatest of episodes, they are usually fun and more accessible to casual viewers and this one was no different. However, it did have Ncuti and Millie in it for the first time, and for that the episode is bumped up a tad higher by me - I have a good feeling about these two. A really good feeling!

“Health and safety. Gin and tonic division.”

I will aim this at the twats saying Doctor Who is too gay, too woke, too black, too blah blah blah.....!! I have tried and failed miserably to get the family interested in Doctor Who, but for the first time my wife was interested and my stepdaughter sat in silence (a bloody miracle) watching intently. She now wants to watch the new series!! So fuck you RIP Doctor Who people!!!!!

I assume the slight changes have been partly down to grabbing new viewers, and what two better people than Ncuti and Millie to lead us into a new dawn. Young, fresh, and exciting!!!!!!!

For the first time the Doctor is actually cool AF. I love everyone who has played the Doctor before but can you imagine any of them dancing and singing to escape?

I hope they get the stories they deserve because I am all in with this pair!!!!!

“Oh! Pssh! They are not time travellers. Excuse me. Time travellers are great. Like the best. Like, wow. This lot just bimble."

So Ncuti and Millie, and Ruby's family get a massive tick from me, but what of the story? Well it was standard Christmas episode fare I suppose. I enjoyed it, I am pretty sure it won't go down as an all time classic though. But that isn't what Christmas episodes are about.

This is why I am so excited for the new series, specials can be amazing, but you can't beat a full series, arcs weaving, different stories being told, getting to know companions and Doctor's and trying your best to be as patient as you can, waiting for the next episode the following week.

I love Ruby, I think she is going to be a great companion for Fifteen. I love the story of her being a foundling, and how caring her family are, even if they are a bit slow on the tea making side of things.

The Goblins and their king weren't amazing villains, although they looked great. But again, you aren't going to get The Flood or Weeping Angels scaring the shit out of you just after you have had your Christmas dinner. This was all about the Doctor and Ruby.

I think I am going to enjoy how fun Ncuti is as well as how emotional he can be at certain times. RTD is going to run and run with the Timeless Child by the looks of it, and the more little bits and bobs he sprinkles in the show the more I think he has already had a bloody good idea where to take it. Maybe I am wrong and it will just be used because of Ruby being adopted, but I get the feeling he is heading somewhere, and it could potentially be epic. Fingers and toes crossed!!

I don't think I realised until I started writing this that RTD has thrown a hell of a lot of potential teases out there in these first four episodes of his new reign. Meep's boss, the one who waits, the Flux, the Timeless Child, the Master in a gold tooth, and now Mrs Flood. I try and stay well clear of spoilers, but I know there is a lot of speculation about her. My initial thoughts on the matter? I haven't the foggiest!!!! RTD was always very good at villain reveals though (the Master reveal in series 3 still lives rent free in my head), so I look forward to whatever happens, to be honest, she might be someone we have never heard of!!

“Merry Christmas, Davina McCall.”

There is one bit where I wanted to punch the sky in celebration, I always love it, and when Ncuti said it I was loving life. Who are you? I'm the Doctor!! Hell yeah you are Ncuti!!

All in all a fun episode with a brilliant Doctor and companion, plus some singing and dancing which is always nice!!! Now the wait is nearly over for the first series in 3 or so years, and I to be honest, I am struggling to contain myself!! Bring it the fuck on!!!!! Good luck Ncuti and Millie!!!

RATING: Good!

BEST LINE: "I'm the Doctor!”
