Doctor Who Series 1 (14), Episode 4 Review: 73 Yards

Updated: Jul 25

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

I am bloody loving this series!! My god I loved this!!

I'm not sure if I'm being biased by finally getting weekly Doctor Who that I haven't seen before, but what the hell, I'm happy to be biased if that is the case because I'm loving it!! Big time!!

The episodes have been wildly different each time, and yes, I know that's a Doctor Who USP, but these have been off the scale different. The Devils Chord feels like such a long time ago now after Boom and 73 Yards.

"I don't know a synonym for keeping your distance. I suppose if I coined a new word from the Latin, it would be semperdistans, for always distant. She is semperdistans from you."

I am writing this on Saturday evening and I've already watched it three times!! Ncuti really shone last week but I think Millie outdid him this week! This was her first episode filming at 18 years old, and she absolutely nailed it!! I was struggling to get through days working at Woolworths at that age, what a talent she is!! I hope she goes on to have similar success to her favourite companion, Karen Gillan.

I watched this on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I have seen comments that nothing was explained, but the more I think about this episode, and I have thought about it a lot, the more I think that is a good thing. Will more be revealed come the end of the series? I don’t know. I would like to know why it was 73 yards though - although Russell mentioned standing on a pier and working it out, so it may just be that that distance is a distance where you can’t see a persons features?

I love the questions though. That is a good thing. He might end up throwing a line away at the end of his time, much like who blew up Elevens TARDIS being revealed in The Time of the Doctor. Who knows eh, who….knows!!

I also saw that some people didn’t like the second part of the episode as much, I just thought the whole thing was an absolute banger!

It was creepy, unsettling, and epic. Ruby Sunday is right up there with Fifteen moving up my favourite charts!!

"Even your real mother didn't want you."

Some scenes that stood out were Ruby and her Mum, the venom that line was said with was truly upsetting!! I thought UNIT might struggle to help but help, so when Kate disengages that was a WTF moment.

The final scene as the woman approaches old Ruby in bed was bloody terrifying!! I was waiting to jump out of my skin when first watching it.

I know it may well all link together somehow, but the Susan Twist appearances haven’t got me as gripped as some of the threads running through the series so far. I actually don’t think I would of noticed her without it being mentioned on social media!!

Talking of which, I have gone on a lot less this week, rumours of a big twist at the end of Dot and Bubble have left me petrified of finding out what it is before I watch it. I have no idea what is coming, not a clue, my mind is thinking up scenarios but I have drawn a blank, maybe that is a good thing.

My final verdict though is this was a bloody brilliant episode, a fantastic episode of TV not just Doctor Who.

RATING: Sonic!

BEST LINE: "It's taken me all this time to realise what I'm here to do."
