What did you think of the episode?
Sonic!
Good!
Bumpy-wumpy!
Exterminate!
I'll put this out there before anything else, Ncuti and Millie are fucking great! Like the best! Like, fucking wow!!!!
Anyone who hates on this silly blue box show really must have no joy in their lives. I don't mean people who don't watch it, everyone is different after all, I just mean the people who actively hate it, screaming to the world it's shit, woke, insert other words here!!
This show is made to be enjoyed, and that's what I did here!! In spades!!!!!
Was everything perfect? Of course not, but what is?
This was pretty standard RTD opening episode "shizzle". I think most people would of expected that though, especially after the episode title reveal.
Ncuti and Millie are AMAZING!! I love them already!! They are very different to what we normally have, but they are most definitely still the Doctor and companion. There are little things that make people the Doctor in my opinion, in The Church on Ruby Road it was when the Doctor said curtsey to the Goblin King, tiny line, but done with such humour and I was like yes, I love him!! In this episode there are lots of examples of that, and my favourite was when he scared the shit out of everyone shouting BOGEYMAN and then just pissed himself laughing!!
"It's strange, you were abandoned like this lot. If things connect, you are connecting like crazy."
The show looks amazing, there are so many great visuals, the TARDIS leaving the time vortex towards the space station, and the amazing scene where Fifteen goes back to Ruby at the church. This was the scene of the episode for me, I love a mystery, who do we think Ruby is? I am still hedging my bets on something related to this series rather than a returning companion/monster. I will be proved totally wrong no doubt, but I still think Maestro may return at some point. I think having Bad Wolf Studios means they can have so many sets in there, they can keep more things under wraps, could they have filmed more than we were led to believe?
Enough speculation!! That scene though was brilliant, the snow falling, the hug and the worry on Ncuti's face. There is a hint of Amy Pond about Ruby, some of bits remind me of when the Doctor was trying to work her out in Series 6, obviously the last part of the episode with the scanning is very, very similar.
I did worry about the talking babies, however I should have more faith, this was pretty well done and didn't look shit like I thought it might. This was well shown with the Doctors and Captain Poppy's chat, Ncuti really flexed his Doctor Who muscle here - quite literally!!
"We did almost die."
This whole episode was very RTD. A swearing Nanny, talking babies, a monster made of snot. But why not eh? This show is weird, it is wonderful, and I think this episode is a good way to showcase it to newer viewers. It also had a tricky job to get cracking with being Doctor Who and to introduce new viewers to this bizarre show, so perhaps some of the early introduction to Ruby was a bit rushed, this is how the TARDIS works, bang, this is how the sonic works, bang, I am an alien from Gallifrey, etc, etc. Normally we are just getting to know the companion, not the companion and the Doctor.
I would say this is a pretty strong opening episode, gets rid of a lot of what needs to be said for new viewers, give them and us a fun relatively stress free adventure, and everybody lives Rose, oh I mean Ruby!!!
RATING: Good!
BEST LINE: "Nobody grows up wrong. You are what you are and you are wonderful and magnificent."
