I have absolutely nowhere in the house to put this, we have stuff everywhere. LEGO is very much on the back burner, but I couldn't resist. It will be placed in a box and plonked in the loft with the hope that things clear in 2025.
Lets set the mood before I begin reviewing the Temple of the Golden Idol...
I was left a bit frustrated by my last movie build, Jaws was a complete nightmare to build and keep together. This set however is an absolute delight. I love it.
Let's get one thing clear here before I start - I bloody love Indiana Jones. Don't come at me with oh it isn't as good as it used to be, Indy is still Indy, I love all five films.
I got excited just by the instruction book if I am being honest. Iconic!
I was slightly concerned by the amount of stickers before building, I know I am not alone but I am dreadful at putting them on and I always worry it will ruin the look of the set due to my shoddy work. I shouldn't have worried though, despite my concerns this set looks great.
Importantly for me - this was a joy to build. There were quite a few mechanism parts, which sometimes my brain cannot get its head around, but I didn't have to backtrack once on this set. Due to my lack of space I was also grateful that this set is built in three sections that click together. This made the build less stressful.
Each section is full of nods to iconic moments from the opening of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The highlight is probably the rolling boulder, I mean you cannot get more iconic than that can you?
We have a skeleton lurking in the depths of the cave, a spinning spike that the minifigures can use to swing across to the next stage. We have a moving wall that raises and lowers (hopefully Indy can grab his hat in time before it fully drops down).
One thing I love to do when building a set is not look too far ahead, I love putting bricks together and slowly but surely work out what I am building. That doesn't happen in every set of course, but here I was building cool statues and traps galore. The collapsing wall is a great example of this, I love how no stickers were needed to make it, it looks amazing, and it is a really clever part of the set that collapses when the Golden Idol raises and lowers.
I love to build sets to display, I am boring like that, I follow my instructions and then put sets on the shelf. Even I was enjoying all the moving parts though, turning nobs to watch the boulder move up and down multiple times.
I have never, ever built a set that has a light up brick either, so this made my Christmas before we have even had Christmas. The light beaming down on the idol just adds a final flourish to a great set.
Like I said, I am biased, but this set felt completely different from other sets I have built, it looks cool, and I cannot wait to find a space in the house to display it.
The set comes with four minifigures - of course we have Indiana, complete with hat, whip and satchel, we have Satipo, Belloq and a Hovitos Warrior also.
This set is a perfect celebration of an amazing film. It is unlike a lot of other display sets I have had in that there is so many moving parts, but this fits perfectly with Indiana Jones. It is an 18+ set to build, but I have already seen the youngest enjoying all the different features - especially the boulder.
Priced at £129.99 I think this is a bit of a bargain as well when compared to other sets, although act fast as it is retiring soon.
If you love Indiana Jones this is a must buy set, if you love LEGO this is a must buy set, in summary, this is a must buy set.
Hold on a second!!!! What is the Ninth Doctor doing with Indiana? Is that a Dalek behind them? What is going on? Find out HERE next week!!!
