Doctor Who Series 4, Episode 1 Review: Partners in Crime

Updated: 2 days ago

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

She's back. Hi Donna!! I'm not sure if anyone knew this - but she is a temp!! She never mentions this at all!! Here is my review of the opening of series 4 - Partners in Crime.

Is this the opening vibes RTD was going for with Space Babies? Is this a good episode to compare with the series just gone? Is this Space Babies but with a couple of extra moments that lift it slightly higher. The last scene to this episode is one of my most favourite scenes from the entire show.

Now I have my thinking cap on - was RTD trying to blend his era and Moffat's? He had the slightly goofy opener, some of the old RTD wit and charm, but instead of the family vibes he wove into the first four series he had more of a mystery, the companion is a mystery in fact. Please see Amy, Clara and River for more information. Moffat didn't overly bother with the extended Pond family, and I actually cannot remember Clara's family, there was the deal with a leaf and then she had different parents in The Time of the Doctor? I'll pay more attention on my rewatch. Christ I feel like Donald Trump here, what was the actual point I was originally making? Ah yes, maybe RTD tried to blend his era and Moffat's era, but didn't quite hit either of them.

That doesn't mean to say I didn't like the last series because I bloody loved it. Maybe it could of leaned more towards one than the other though? As I say many times, what do I bloody know? RTD don't hate me, I still think you rock!!

"Health and Safety… Film Department."

Hang on, wasn't it the Gin and Tonic division? Come on, the parallels keep on happening!!

Catherine Tate is back, and this time she is better than ever. I think there is slightly more heart in Donna now, she is a bit less shouty. As the series moves on she gets even better. Donna is an amazing character, I just wish her ending didn't get undone, but we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

The Adipose are very cute, but it all seems pretty harmless (unless you are the woman from Baby Reindeer).

It would be remiss of me not to mention the window scene, which still raises a smile to this day. Actually, half of Royal Albert Hall was laughing when this came on the screens at the Proms.

Sarah Lancashire is great as Ms. Foster, I really enjoyed her. Just how matter a fact she was about things, lovely stuff.

"Planet of the Hats. I’m ready!"

Hold up - Rose is back!!!! FML!! WTF!! I didn't officially start watching religiously until Planet of the Dead, one to four were all done very quickly, and then repeated a lot, on DVD, so to the fans of Rose who had missed her for a couple of years this must of been a real punch the air moment.

Ms. Foster meets a slightly comical ending, and of course my favourite of extras over acting happens, I will always love this. Do extras do this in other shows? Granted, most shows you would be having a drink in a pub, and not losing your body fat to cute white blobs, praise be to the silly blue box show.

Now, the final scene - yes bloody please. Bernard Cribbins is a delight as it is, but oh my fucking God I love this so much. The absolute joy on his face that his granddaughter has found the man in the blue box. The fact he isn't shocked, he is just loving life. Donna waving like a mad woman and the Doctor giving a smile and a wave, love, love, love!!!! I struggle to watch this without welling up a bit, honestly, this is why I love the show. This moment, and it happens straight after blobs of fat come out of people and fly off in a spaceship after killing their surrogate mother. I mean come on!! How amazing is this show.

I thought it was a pretty good episode, but this scene and the window scene always make it a firm favourite to watch.
