Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are absolute gems, as is a certain Steven Moffat. Series 5 will have a special place in my heart but I do think it was ever so slightly hit or miss. That does not stop the hits hitting extremely hard though! So here goes nothing, a ranking of every episode in series 5 of Doctor Who...
13. Victory of the Daleks
It is a bit cringe isn't it? Bracewell is about as irritating as a character can get, the dialogue seemed a bit off, Churchill was a bit of a caricature, the Daleks were the colours of the rainbow, I could go on...
12. Cold Blood
The other story in this series with characters that grated on me. I can't help it, I am a grumpy old man!
11. The Hungry Earth
As above really.
10. The Beast Below
Not bad, and probably dragged down a bit by the fact that Steven Moffat has set his bar very high. I think this is potentially one of the weaker episodes he has written, but it is still a fun little story. Matt Smith losing his shit is always fun to watch as well.
9. The Vampires of Venice
A harmless romp. Some moments look a bit dated now, but it is still a good episode. One of those mid-season run-arounds.
8. Flesh and Stone
I probably placed this lower for one reason only - we saw the Weeping Angels move. Not cool Moffat, not cool. I hate the fact that Amy is such a shit to Rory, but horny Amy would be fun to be around so I am not knocking it down for that!!!! Yeah, yeah, I know, I am only human after all!!
7. Vincent and the Doctor
A lot of people probably rank this higher, and I can totally see why. The ending is one of the great episode endings. I love how it looks into the mental struggles Vincent and other people have, and it is handled well.
6. The Time of Angels
It was great to have River back, it was great to have the Weeping Angels back, it looked great, and it is amazing that this was the first episode shot as Matt and Karen look like they have been doing it for years.
5. Amy's Choice
Toby Jones makes this episode. I would love to see more of the Dream Lord at some point. Also, the icy TARDIS is gorgeous!!
4. The Pandorica Opens
Absolute epic episode. A good sign then that this isn't in the top three. It would be if I didn't have a soft spot for The Lodger. Monsters galore, spaceships galore, mysteries galore, about four different cliffhangers, it was thrilling.
3. The Big Bang
Probably the best, or close to the best, finales we have ever had. I loved how different it was to The Pandorica Opens, I love all the time travel, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are insanely good, and the scene where Amy remembers the Doctor at her wedding and gives her something borrowed speech is possibly the highlight of the entire season.
2. The Lodger
I know, I know. I can't help it, this episode brings me such joy. I love the Doctor and Craig's relationship, I love how quirky Eleven is, I love the mystery around an unmanned TARDIS, I love seeing the Doctor play football. Funny, surprisingly emotional in parts, perfectly placed in the series before the shit hits the fan in the finale, it is a blast.
1. The Eleventh Hour
A marvel. Magical. Genius. Beautiful! There is a reason so many people say to watch this one first. Unbelievably this is getting on fifteen years old, and it is weird to think after all this time that
