Doctor Who Series 5, Episode 7 Review: Amy's Choice

Series 5 was always a bit up and down in my eyes - but this was very much a big up!!


Finally we get to see a bit more of Rory here, he had been far too wet around the ears up to this point for my liking!! Amy shows a bit more of a caring side as well, as opposed to trying to cop off with the Doctor behind her fiancees back, and shouting 'shut up' at people a lot.


"You’ve swallowed a planet."


Matt Smith continues to get better and better and I think this is his best performance of the series so far. When you find out what he knew by the end of the episode - that it was himself that hated himself, it is kind of heartbreaking.


Toby Jones was a great piece of casting, he makes such a great villain. He is obviously having fun with the gig he had been given. His riddles, taunts, and philosophical challenges push the characters to their limits, and he steels every scene he is in. I think we can all agree that the Dream Lord would be welcome back anytime.


"Well that took a while. Honestly, I’d heard such good things. Last of the Time Lords. The Oncoming Storm. Him in the bowtie."


You all know of course, but the Dream Lord is a memorable creation, that manipulates the Doctor, Amy and Rory's perceptions, serving as a manifestation of their fears and doubts. His riddles, taunts, and philosophical challenges push the characters to their limits, and his presence raises the stakes of the narrative, adding a sense of real danger to the surreal dream worlds they inhabit. Toby Jones does such a good job in making the Dream Lord both sinister and funny.


I think this was the TARDIS teams strongest outing yet - as a unit - their chemistry and acting went up a notch here. It was nice to see Amy treat Rory with some respect at last, even if he had to be killed first (take note Amy, this might happen a fair bit in the future). I love how Karen Gillan acts sad and angry at the same time, when she asks the Doctor what is the point of him that hits hard. I wouldn't want to be around Karen when she is disappointed in you. Ouch!


I will save my praise for Matt Smith for the finale, but needless to say he is bloody good!


One minor nitpick - but how the fuck did that crash kill Amy and the Doctor?! A two yard run up and a 5mph crash into the house?


"So, you chose this world. Well done. You got it right. And with only seconds left. Fair’s fair. Let’s warm you up. I hope you’ve enjoyed your little fictions. They all came out of your imagination so, ah, I’ll leave you to ponder on that. I have been defeated. I shall withdraw. Farewell."


Talking of choices...


I have recently deleted my Twitter account and moved on to Bluesky. I was a bit late to Twitter, so all I ever saw were Temu ads and tits, but it got me thinking about things.


There is always something said on Twitter, and various other places that pisses me right off - well why don't you debate about it. Maybe I am showing my age, but if I believe something to be true, or right, or wrong, why the fuck do I need to debate it? I never used to have to debate it before social media! I just avoided people who I didn't like or agree with. Why can't people do that on social media as well?


Why does everything need a debate?? I love Doctor Who, some people think it is shit, so what!! It is what it is!!


Why are the people who complain that trans people don't debate certain issues and live in their own echo chambers shout, scream and type about the farmers who are moaning here in the UK? Are they OK to whine and whinge about their oh so cruel tax on anything over £3 million? I mean the poor darlings will probably be homeless missing out on their tax dodges!!! I am being sarcastic of course, pay up you posh sods with plums in your mouth!


It is politicians who need to debate and do what they think is right, if we don't agree with it, they can get fucked every four or five years. Why politicians these days feel the need to get involved with all this shit is beyond me. I hope and pray that the next leaders of left leaning parties all over the world ignore the noise and stick to their convictions. Promising rainbows and love just won't do, we want someone to say why they will help people and their families, why they will help minorities and then explain how they will do it. That is all they need to do to beat these incompetent clowns that keep getting voted in.


I firmly believe that it should be next to impossible to lose to the Tories and Donald Trump. Do I think everyone who votes for them are bad people, no I don't, I think a lot of people just have no hope in politics, and rightly or wrongly they believe the shit that is peddled out that says they are looking out for you and your family rather than Johnny Foreigner. I don't think that is racist for people to believe that, some people of course are, but some people are struggling and they need help. How sad is it that people think the answer is a convicted bullshitting rapist and a group of Eaton educated pricks who burn money in front of the homeless for fun. How can these people not be beaten every election? Sort it out left!!!


I have lost the point I was trying to make somewhere along the line here. I guess what I am trying to say is of course people can ignore people, of course people can believe someone is thick as fuck and block them, the right bleat about free speech, well I am all for free blocking!! I guess the other point I am trying to make is fuck the rich. The ones telling you that immigrants are the problem, the ones who tax dodge, the ones who could end most of the worlds problems by giving out a fraction of their wealth.


Of all the billionaires out there though I will give Elon Musk some credit - at least he doesn't hide what a first class cunt he is like all the others!!
