Doctor Who Series 5, Episode 11 Review: The Lodger

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

I don't know what it is about this episode, I should despise it, I am not a Corden fan at all, I love a scary monster, I prefer it a bit more serious, and yet I bloody love this one!! It is in fact one of the episodes I stick on a lot!!

In my defence, I think the main reason for that is Matt Smith. He is so good in this, playing the part to perfection. A lot of people would just look silly, but he manages to make his uncoolness cool. No mean feat!!!

"Less of a young professional. More of an ancient amateur. But frankly I’m an absolute dream."

I won't go into any issues with the writer, I am now of the opinion if you like something you like it, it is there in the world and there is nothing anyone can do about it. I don't know how things work in television so maybe I should stay quiet, but I see no reason that they should have taken Fear Her off iPlayer (apart from the simple reason it is probably the weakest, most cringe worthy episode of modern Doctor Who). Do they do it to stop people being paid for their work? Or is it done because it isn't a good look? Maybe I am being insensitive - I know people would of been affected by Edwards' actions, actually, I will stay quiet, maybe it should of come off after all.

Anyway, this is a light-hearted story, and one in which Matt Smith shines. He is brilliant in this, this is Eleven in all his glory, alien, humorous, clumsy and amazing. Ancient and young, just an all round top Time Lord who you would love to be mates with and have playing for your local Sunday morning football team.

It is a fairly simple episode, and maybe that is what I like about it so much. It is a break. Moffat loves to play with things, so it was great to just sit back and have some random fun with the Doctor and Craig.

I am no Corden fan, but I was fully invested in Craig and Sophie's relationship, so that earns the pai a big thumbs up from me. I guess I can relate to all those awkward moments and silences - a bit too much than I care to admit!!

I think Matt Smith and Corden developed a bit of a bromance during the filming of this, and it shows on the screen.

"Football. All outdoorsy. Now. Football’s the one with the sticks, isn’t it?"

So were the monsters in this the Silence? I never did fully work that one out? I think they were.

"Six billion, four hundred thousand and twenty-six people in the world. That’s the number to beat."

In summary this isn't dark, it isn't full of lore, there are no massive explosions and no worldwide invasions, but it is fun, and sweet, and a really delightful gem.

I will forever stick this episode on - unless a member of the cast acts up meaning it is taken off iPlayer - when I am at a loose end. An all round feel good adventure!!

RATING: Sonic!

BEST LINE: "Well I’ve got one of those faces. People never stop blurting out their plans when I’m around."
