Doctor Who Series 4, Episodes 8 & 9 Review: Silence in the Library & Forest of the Dead

What did you think of these episodes?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

Honestly, Steven Moffat wins every single time doesn't he? Once I have rewatched every episode I will rank everyone of his episodes, and I think it may be one of the hardest things I will ever do.

You can see why there was so much excitement when he took over. Banger after banger after banger.

The episode looks great, I won't hear a bad word about it. The visuals of the library are amazing. Didn't they film a lot of this in one library but just kept changing the colours of the room so it looked like somewhere else? I am sure most shows do this, but Doctor Who does it better!!

The first part of the story all takes part in the library and we get to meet a character called River Song. At first I found it all a bit irritating, spoilers and all that jazz, but it grew on me, a lot!! This lead to some truly great moments in the second part of the story.

Things really start to get good when Miss Evangelista of Elon Musk fame gets eaten alive in her spacesuit though...

"Gorgeous and can’t speak a word. What am I gonna do with you?"

I think the second part of this story shows the pros and cons of child actors. Cal is amazing, the children in the Cal world - not so much. Credit to Catherine Tate here because I still lost my shit when they disappeared in their beds. I would of been grateful normally, but she sold it.

Murray Gold is being his usual self, I don't even need to say it really. These episodes in particular though - some of the music is jaw droppingly good. I love the tension building underneath the scene in the playground and The Greatest Story Never Told is a marvel, one of my favourite pieces of music from the entire show.

Rude not to slip it in here! Enjoy!

"You know when you see a photograph of someone you know, but it’s from years before you knew them. It’s like they’re not quite finished—they’re not done yet. Yes, The Doctor’s here. He came when I called just like he always does. But not my Doctor. Now my Doctor, I’ve seen whole armies turn and run away. And he’d just swagger off, back to his TARDIS. And open the doors with a snap of his fingers. The Doctor. In the TARDIS. Next stop: Everywhere."

This episode is so Moffat. I love how he takes something we come across in our daily lives and turns it into a monster. How many children (and adults) must of been shitting themselves walking in the dark after this? Almost every species in the Universe has an irrational fear of the dark. But they’re wrong. ‘Cause it’s not irrational. It’s Vashta Nerada. So good!!!!

We also get River. As the story progresses she gets more and more intriguing, the look on the Doctor's face when she tells him his name is marvellous. Actually there are a lot of looks on faces in this, all telling a thousand words, such good acting all round.

River gives a couple of brilliant speeches near the end, all over sequences of the Doctor being amazing, I actually forgot just how bloody good this one was.

A Moffat episode ALWAYS comes with high expectations, it must be hard work for the man to try and keep his standards up. I think when I get around to ranking every Moffat episode it will become clear that his standards are pretty damn high!!

"Some days are special. Some days are so so blessed. Some days nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while—every day in a million days when the wind stands fair and the Doctor comes to call—everybody lives."

I love the end to this episode so much! When Lee tries to shout at Donna that breaks your heart. Then there is the I'm alright chat. Then we have the Doctor saving River, the smile he gives Cal as he plugs in her sonic is fist punching the air good, and then we have the River speech. Oh and to cap it off we have the Doctor clicking his fingers to open the TARDIS doors, the shadows disappearing off the floor and the look on Tennant's face as he realises he can do it, so good. Amazing writing, amazing acting, series 4 is a bloody masterpiece!

RATING: Sonic!

BEST LINE: "Donna Noble has left the library. Donna Noble has been saved."
