Doctor Who Series 4, Episode 7 Review: The Unicorn and the Wasp

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

We are very much back on track, I bloody loved this one! Straight from the moment Professor Peach exclaims "I say, what are you doing with that lead piping?!" in the library I was completely sold.

Catherine Tate and David Tennant shine in a more light hearted episode, and it has so many funny moments in it.

"Agatha Christie! I was just talking about you the other day. I said, I bet she’s brilliant. I’m the Doctor, this is Donna. Oh, I love your stuff. What a mind! You fool me every time. Well, almost every time. Well, once or twice. Well, once. But it was a good one."

Ah, we have the troublesome writer again, but that doesn't in anyway deflect from my enjoyment of this episode. Perhaps I am lucky in that I can block all that out. An example of this is Paul Gascoigne has done some awful, awful things in his life, but he is still my favourite footballer of all time. You cannot take away the moments of joy he gave me, getting into football at just the right time for Italia 90. His goal against Scotland, his freekick against Arsenal...

Another example is Huw Edwards is a bit of a dick, but that doesn't get in the way of my lack of enjoyment of Fear Her.

In no way am I condoning what these people have done, but we would have absolutely no joy in our life if we didn't enjoy things would we? If everything we love is tainted or ruined by things from the past would we actually ever love anything?!

It is always a worry when you like something that has someone involved who is now just seen as a piece of shit. If you were a fan of Harry Potter then I don't think you should not be a fan of Harry Potter now. This works both ways as well if I am being brutally honest - if you don't like David Tennant because he pissed off a few Tories it doesn't mean you cannot enjoy this era. Admit it, you loved the tenth Doctor really didn't you?

You could hate any era for all sorts of reasons, Billie Piper was married to an absolute Tuesday, Barrowman flashing his Barrowman, David Bradley was in Harry Potter, and on and on and on. That should never, ever take away your love from the show, being a fan of something is so special. Whether that is a show, a team, a band. Seeing Swifties exchanging bracelets is wholesome, there is something amazing when you are in a group of people all rooting for the same thing, a show to be good, a team to win!

Daniel Radcliffe had it spot on when referencing JK Rowling's views:

To all the people who now feel that their experience of the books has been tarnished or diminished, I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you. If these books taught you that love is the strongest force in the universe, capable of overcoming anything; if they taught you that strength is found in diversity, and that dogmatic ideas of pureness lead to the oppression of vulnerable groups; if you believe that a particular character is trans, nonbinary, or gender fluid, or that they are gay or bisexual; if you found anything in these stories that resonated with you and helped you at any time in your life — then that is between you and the book that you read, and it is sacred. And in my opinion nobody can touch that. It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much.

He stood up to be counted saying this, and he is correct. He certainly said what I am trying to say but a whole lot better!!!

Anyway...

"I’ll pluck you in a minute."

This is fun! Fun, fun, fun! I hope people can still enjoy it for what it is - a slightly daft Doctor Who episode. I mean we have a giant wasp alien thing killing people like they were in an Agatha Christie book, with Agatha Christie present - Doctor Who doing Doctor Who things.

We also have a scene that I think tops the Doctor and Donna window scene from Partners in Crime. The Doctor is poisoned with sparkling cyanide, funny in itself given the context of the episode, but the madness that follows is hilarious. Tennant and Tate are such a good pairing and this still made me chuckle even though I have seen it so many times. How is Harvey Wallbanger one word?

"Oh that’s too salty."

Does anyone else like it when Doctor Who takes credit (for want of a better word) for events from history? We had the Doctor blowing the volcano up in Pompeii and now we have the reason for Agatha Christie's disappearance.

Another great scene is where the murderer is revealed and the reasons behind it all. Spiffing!! The car chase was a bit dodgy I won't lie, the wasp was flying at quite the speed, yet Agatha's car had a top speed of 3mph, I think she might of been caught before she reached the lake.

That didn't spoil a bloody good episode though. Thank you to our silly blue box show for being so daft and brilliant all at the same time!!

RATING: Sonic!

BEST LINE: "I say. What are you doing with that lead piping?"
