This is one of my favourite series. It is such a consistent run of good stories.
Smith and Jones is a great opening episode and The Shakespeare Code and Gridlock are underrated gems. Gridlock especially is such a great story. On rewatch the Dalek two parter was better than I remembered, and I always like it when the show takes things in different directions. You can only blow the shit out of everything with angry Daleks so many times, so to have them trying to survive in different ways with the Cult of Skaro was a breath of fresh air.
Maybe The Lazarus Experiment and 42 were slight blots on the series, but even those, which many were deem the weaker episodes of the series have good bits.
The run to the finale was pretty much as strong a run of episodes as the show as ever had. Human Nature, The Family of Blood, Blink, Utopia, The Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords.
It would also be foolish of me not to mention The Runaway Bride, which was bloody good fun! The TARDIS on the motorway is still one of my favourite scenes in the show ever.
This is our first look at Doctor Who without Billie Piper as Rose. The show could of struggled without her, but I actually think it gave us a better look at the Tenth Doctor. I don't think David Tennant would of become the iconic figure in Doctor Who without losing Rose and without his relationships with Martha and Donna. They enhanced him greatly.
I don't ever want this to come across as Rose slating by the way. Billie Piper will always hold a special place in my heart, she is a massive, and I mean massive, reason why we still have Doctor Who on our televisions now. Without her the show would not of been as popular as it is, and her portrayal in series 1 was magic. Her portrayal in Series 2 was magic as well by the way, I just didn't feel the love towards TenRose as much as other people. So when Freema came in as Martha it was a breath of fresh air.
We didn't get quite as much Jones' family life as we did of the Tyler's. That was a great dynamic in the first two series, but here we only got fleeting looks at Martha's family. Again, a different direction, I loved Jackie and co, but it was nice to have a change also.
The biggest weakness may be Martha pining after the Doctor so much, certainly in the first half, it kind of felt like it wasn't justified so early on. I cannot imagine Martha is the kind of woman that would just fall in love and hop into bed with a man she just met, I mean she was gagging for it in The Shakespeare Code wasn't she?
I really think Series 3 deserves more love. I feel like the series wouldn't reach the top of anyone's list, yet it has episodes that will be fondly remembered, episodes that will top charts for best ever Doctor Who episodes. It also has a twist/reveal that will forever be fondly remembered.
I don't know what the talk was at the time of the series airing. I am sure some people worked out who Harold Saxon might be, and then worked out who Professor Yana was. I, on the other hand, had no clue. The first time I watched Utopia I had my mind blown, and this is someone who didn't have any recollection of the Master.
So we had great twists, some really emotional moments, particularly in The Family of Blood, a good dollop of humour, a great Christmas special, the beginnings of one of the shows most iconic monsters, yes, series 3 you will forever be famous to me!!
