Doctor Who Series 3, Episode 7 Review: 42

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

Chris Chibnall's first Doctor Who offering. In the past this was probably just a throwaway middle of the road episode, but over the years it has become more after Jodie and all the hate (and love I will hasten to add) this period of the show got.

I will cross that bridge when I come to it but just a small spoiler alert, I wasn't a huge fan of series 11, thought parts of series 12 were thrilling and loved The Flux. People use this episode to paint this as a warning for what was to come. Was I a fan of this? Not really. Did I despise it? Not at all.

With that all said I thought it was alright, certainly not one of the better offerings of what I think is a really, really strong series.

"Burn with me!"

Actually, I have changed my mind, I will mention briefly about Chibbers run with Thirteen. Only briefly mind you. Some people may have accused him of trying to pull gimmicks, casting a female Doctor for example, however I found Thirteen's run to be a brave and bold change in direction. Of course everything didn't work, but not everything worked in every series. We have had farting aliens, cock sucking paving slabs, horny companions trying to bang the Doctor, etc. I don't mind some of those things by the way, but I think the fandom have pretty much ridiculed all of those decisions.

He took gambles and I liked it. Not all of it, series 11 just wasn't for me. 42 however, is pretty safe Doctor Who. Run of the mill stuff and not a whole lot to report back on.

"Any number that doesn't, isn't. A happy prime is a number that is both happy and prime. Now type it in! I don't know, talk about dumbing down! Don't they teach recreational mathematics any more?"

I thought Martha snogging the bloke was a bit off, she had been gagging for some Doctor the rest of the series after all, plus, as this was an episode set in real time, they only knew each other for about 30 minutes. Talks of finding the woman of your dreams and the like seem a bit far fetched. Maybe I'm just a cynic!!

I did enjoy the scene where the Doctor goes outside the ship, Murray Gold doing Murray Gold things.

I often wonder what would happen to me if I was in a Doctor Who episode. The amount of people that make sacrifices of their lives is ridiculously high, there isn't a hope in hell I am jumping out a spaceship or blowing myself up, not even for the Doctor.

In summary - this is alright.

RATING: Bumpy-wumpy!

BEST LINE: "Now, where was I? Here comes the sun. No, resources."
