Doctor Who Series 2 Review

David Tennant and Billie Piper are so iconic in regards to Doctor Who, and to be honest just life in general, however, it pains me to say, this is one of the weaker series of Doctor Who, I certainly think it is RTD's weakest series.

As it is Doctor Who, I may think it is the weakest, but I also think there are some glorious moments. We got some absolute all timer episodes as well. The Girl in the Fireplace, The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit are fucking epic. I do think there are a few too many middling episodes though. Tooth and Claw, The Idiot's Lantern, and the less that is said of Fear Her the better.

I don't think we get to see David Tennant in all his Ten glory this series, but then that was to be expected in hindsight as the Doctor found himself. Rose had a swing in personality which didn't quite do it for me, she seemed to become a whole lot more selfish. Now I know this may have been the intention, but I just couldn't quite buy in to the Rose and Ten vibes as they gave off some mean vibes at times, it was them and nobody else mattered quite as much. Maybe I have read it all wrong, I know a lot of people adore their partnership, so there must be something in it.

The Christmas Invasion and New Earth were nice little introductory episodes for us to get to know Ten, I loved The Christmas Invasion, RTD knocked it out the park. The pressure must of been on to make a Christmas special whilst introducing a new Doctor. Luckily the country had fallen in love again with the show and RTD wrote a banger. New Earth was a fun little jaunt as well, even if it did involve some quite dark tones. David and Billie were both hilarious in the episode as well.

I wasn't as keen on Tooth and Claw but School Reunion was a lovely piece of television bringing back our old friend Sarah Jane. It was also a bloody fun episode, but it was topped the following week by The Girl in the Fireplace. That episode was magical, but it did feel a tad out of place in the series. I mentioned in my review but the Doctor didn't seem all that fussed with losing Rose and buggering off to snog posh French ladies. Most of the series revolved around the Doctor and Rose relying on each other, depending on each other and not wanting to lose each other, so when they do lose each other and the Doctor just brushes it off its a bit odd. The more I think about the more I think this would of been better as a Ten/Martha story - poor old Martha!!

The Cyberman two parter was solid and opened up the interesting dynamic of a parallel world which obviously played a very big part in the epic finale. I wasn't a massive fan of The Idiot's Lantern, even though there were some fun parts.

I loved The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, some of RTD's best Doctor Who. Love & Monsters is a tad underrated, it is so much fun!! Yeah some things are a miss, but Doctor Who is at its best when it experiments now and again - Love & Monsters walked so Blink and Midnight could run.

I think Fear Her is one of the poorest episodes we have had in modern Who. It is one of those episodes I wouldn't dare to watch with anyone else around in case they saw it and thought Doctor Who is shit. I protect this show with my life!!

The series ends with a banger two parter with one of the more emotional endings as Billie Piper bids us goodbye (for now). What an absolute legend she is!! Why you wanna play that song so loud? Because we want to, because we want to!!

It was all a bit hit and miss for me. Some of the episodes I would rate as absolute all timers, but in the most part it is pretty safe and just OK. Needless to say this is just my opinion and I know series 2 rates highly with other people. I also know that a lot of people aren't grumpy as fuck like me and adored Ten and Rose.

At some point I shall rank the series, but I do think this one will be near the bottom. Luckily for me David Tennant becomes more Ten from here on, and I do love Martha and Donna so I cannot wait to revisit their adventures.

Molto bene!
