Doctor Who FanFic- Thasmin - The Edge of Forever #DWFanFic

"Yaz?"

The Doctor's voice was soft, hesitant, a complete lack of confidence. Yaz turned from the TARDIS console, her hand resting lightly on the edge of the screen showing the spiralling colours of the time vortex.

"Yeah?" Yaz's voice was equally quiet, as if speaking too loudly might stop the Doctor asking her whatever was on her mind. She definitely had something on her mind, Yaz could tell by the Doctor's face, almost seeing her brain whirring with another issue on top of the hundreds that already swirled around her barmy brain.

The Doctor's hand hovered in the air, like she was about to reach out, but thought better of it. Instead, she shoved both hands into the oversized pockets of her coat. "I was thinking, maybe we could take a break."

Yaz frowned. "A break from what?"

"From running." The Doctor smiled looking down at her boots. "From saving the universe. Just for a bit."

Yaz raised an eyebrow. "Are you feeling okay?"

"I'm fine, you know me Yasmin Khan? Always fine. Well, most of the time." The Doctor's smile widened, but Yaz noticed how her eyes didn’t quite match the humor in her voice. "I just thought… we could go somewhere quiet. Just us."

"Like a date?" Yaz teased, the word slipping out before she could stop it. Her heart thudded painfully in her chest as the silence stretched between them. The Doctor’s eyes stayed firmly on her boots, her feet shuffling.

"Yeah, like a date.” the Doctor said at last.

Yaz’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

“A date, a serious date." The Doctor repeated as she bounced on the balls of her feet. "Well, not deadly serious, that would ruin the vibe, wouldn’t it? But yeah. Thought we could try it. If you want to."

Yaz’s lips curled into a slow smile. "Yeah. I’d like that."

The Doctor’s eyes finally rose to look at Yaz, her face brightening. "Brilliant." She spun to the console, hands flying across the levers and buttons. "Right, let’s see...we need quiet, we need beauty, and we definitely don't want danger.”

She looked up and flashed a smile at Yaz.

"Oh Yaz, I have just the place. Mucho Padiso, twin sunsets, and not just any sunsets either. One of the suns is blue, the other is red, and when they set together, the whole place turns the most amazing purple. I went there a couple of years ago, overturned the government with a toothbrush and a button, it was a long day."

"You’re really trying to impress me now, aren’t you?" Yaz grinned.

"Is it working?"

"Ask me after the sunset."

The Doctor shot her a bright, slightly mischievous smile. "Hold on!"

The TARDIS roared beneath their feet as it began to spin its way through time and space. Yaz gripped the console unit, watching the Doctor with a fondness she didn’t bother hiding anymore. It had taken her so long to say it, so long to even admit to herself, she loved the Doctor. And now, it felt like maybe, just maybe, the Doctor was ready to love her back.

The TARDIS engines quietened and the Doctor raised her arm, gesturing to Yaz to open the door. Yaz gave the Doctor an excited grin and practically skipped to the door. Taking a deep breath she pushed the door open and stepped out onto the surface of another alien planet. How many had she set foot on now? Too many to count.

The air on Muchos Padiso was warm and sweet, filled with the faint scent of salt and wildflowers. The twin suns were sinking toward the horizon, casting ripples of a lavender purple across the vast ocean. A breeze whipped up the salty water and filled the air with it.

The Doctor slipped past Yaz and walked towards a clifftop. The rocks were white, but bathed in the purple glow of the suns. She stopped at the edge, and turned to Yaz who was slowly making her way forwards. The Doctor held out both arms, reaching them towards the ocean.

The sun setting with a purple sky casting its light over water

“This spot, right where we are, it’s called the edge of forever.” the Doctor stated matter of factly. “We are on the only piece of land on this planet, a tiny island, surrounded by this. Cool eh?”

Yaz reached the Doctor’s side and reached for her hand. Neither spoke for a while as they watched the purple haze illuminate the froth of the large waves crashing into the cliff face.

"It’s beautiful," Yaz said finally. Her voice soft, not wanting to break the tranquil moment. Just the Doctor and Yaz and the purple openness before them.

"Yeah it is," the Doctor murmured. Yaz turned her head and found the Doctor looking not at the sunset - but at her.

Yaz’s breath hitched.

The Doctor’s gaze softened. Slowly, carefully, she reached out and took the other of Yaz’s hand. Yaz’s heart hammered so loudly in her ears she was sure the Doctor could hear it. Their eyes met.

"Yaz," the Doctor whispered.

"Yeah?"

"I will ruin this in a minute I’m sure, I'm so bad at this sort of thing.” The Doctor’s thumbs brushed small circles against both of Yaz’s hands. "I’ve lost so many people. Gotten it wrong more times than I can count. But you, you are brilliant, my Yaz, brilliant.”

Yaz smiled. The Doctor’s blonde hair looked as purple as the sky as the light surrounded her.

Yaz lent towards the Doctor and closed her eyes. Her hands trembling, their lips brushing. The Doctor didn’t move, didn’t pull back. They kissed, their hands tightening together. The Doctor pulled away, and Yaz let out a little whimper.

"I’m scared," the Doctor blurted out. "Not of monsters or the end of the universe. Scared of losing you."

"You won’t lose me Doctor, never." Yaz’s voice was steady, even though her heart was racing.

The Doctor released her hands from Yaz’s and reached out, her warm fingers pushing her jet black hair behind her ear. The Doctor’s eyes were wide.

“You are more beautiful than a sunset Yasmin Khan.” the Doctor whispered, she looked shocked that she had even said it.

Yaz giggled, and wrapped her arms around the Doctor. The butterflies had flown away out of her stomach, finally, this felt right. She kissed the Doctor more forcefully this time, her hands sliding down the Doctor’s back. The pair deepened the kiss, their tongues meeting, toying with each other.

When they pulled apart, Yaz was breathless. The Doctor was smiling - really smiling - her eyes bright and golden in the dying light of the sunset.

"So…" Yaz said, breathless. "Now what?"

The Doctor laughed, her forehead resting against Yaz’s. "I want more of those kisses. But right now? Let’s watch."

The suns dipped to the edge of the ocean, casting their light on the water which had stilled, for a moment, it looked like there were four suns.

Yaz grinned. "Fine by me.”

The stars began to flicker into existence overhead as the pair sat on the rocks, their hands locked together tight. Yaz let out a satisfied sigh, and lent her head on the Doctor’s shoulder as the waves gently licked the rock they had been angrily crashing into only moments ago.

For once, there was no running. No monsters. No impossible choices. Just the two of them, and the quiet promise of whatever came next.

Together. On the edge of forever.

Thank you for taking the time to read my little Doctor Who FanFic story. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did writing it. If you did enjoy it, I have more.

Oh and remember, we are all stories in the end, just try and make it a good one, eh?
