When people talk about Doctor Who and ratings we always hear how the TV landscape has changed. I mean it has changed massively since Rose aired, they don't even compare. I wanted to see how other things have changed as well, so I've trawled through the internet to find out what song was top of the UK charts for each episode that aired. I know, it's probably pointless, but who knows, maybe I'll find a couple of songs that fit with the episode that aired that week, or at least remind myself (and you) of a couple of bangers!
I'll start with series 1 and 2 this week. Here goes…
26th March 2005
Rose
(Is This the Way to) Amarillo
Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
The Doctor is back and it all started with a Comic Relief hit by Tony Christie and Peter Kay.
Jesus H Christ - Jimmy Saville is in the video!! That's not a strong look to start with - I was hoping for some happy memories with my rose tinted glasses on.
2nd April 2005
The End of the World
(Is This the Way to) Amarillo
Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
One only wonders if Elton Pope was sat in his bedroom listening to this without knowing that the bloke singing is going to turn his future girlfriend into an oral giving paving slab?
9th April 2005
The Unquiet Dead
(Is This the Way to) Amarillo
Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
Still there, songs did last a lot longer than they do these days I guess.
16th April 2005
Aliens of London
(Is This the Way to) Amarillo
Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
I was hoping for a bit more variety in the songs when I thought of doing this! I've committed now though so hopefully Kay and Christie are booted off soon!!
23rd April 2005
World War Three
(Is This the Way to) Amarillo
Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
I'm irritated now!! The Slitheen family almost had all the worlds nuclear weapons as Mr Blobby, Sooty, Sweep and Orville marched down a corridor.
30th April 2005
Dalek
(Is This the Way to) Amarillo
Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
FFS!! I was hoping for a more deadly song for the return of the Daleks!
7th May 2005
The Long Game
(Is This the Way to) Amarillo
Tony Christie Ft. Peter Kay
Oh piss off now Peter!!
14th May 2005
Father's Day
Lonely
Akon Ft. Styles P
Finally!! Akon knocks Armadillo off the top spot. A song that would become big again in years to come during COVID. Pete Tyler didn't die lonely!
21st May 2005
The Empty Child
Lonely
Akon Ft. Styles P
Uh-oh, this isn't going to be another long one is it? I do recall hearing this a lot.
28th May 2005
The Doctor Dances
Lyla
Oasis
Oasis were still doing bits long after Brit Pop. I quite like this one. I'm not sure the Doctor would be able to dance to it though. Although if any Doctor could, it would certainly be our Doctor from the North. I think Eccleston is a Man United fan though, so he might not take to kindly to Oasis' taste in football teams.
EDIT: Oasis are doing bits again now! Did any of you take a mortgage out for a ticket?
4th June 2005
Boom Town
Crazy Frog
Axel F
Now this is what I was looking for. You wouldn't get Oasis knocked off the top of the charts by Crazy Frog these days would you? If you know what this is, I bet it's stuck in your head already! If you don't know what it is, I can only apologise!!!
11th June 2005
Bad Wolf
Crazy Frog
Axel F
That advert had a lot to answer for!
18th June 2005
The Parting of the Ways
Crazy Frog
Axel F
Christopher Eccleston regenerates as everyone gets the Crazy Frog ring tone. It doesn't seem quite right somehow does it? He deserved better!!
25th December 2005
The Christmas Invasion
That’s My Goal
Shayne Ward
Tennant emerges but so does Simon Cowell. I can't lie though, I'm a bit of a fan of this one.
15th April 2006
New Earth
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
Now this was a song that drove me crackers, it was as if the radio stations played this and this alone.
22nd April 2006
Tooth and Claw
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
Still there!
29th April 2006
School Reunion
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
This song was so cack, how?!?! Sarah Jane is back, give me something else please?
6th May 2006
The Girl in the Fireplace
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
Yuck!
13th May 2006
Rise of the Cybermen
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
Seriously? Gnarls Barkley driving me crazy more like!
20th May 2006
Age of Steel
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
Were we really this pathetic?
27th May 2006
The Idiot's Lantern
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
Taking the piss now!!
3rd June 2006
The Impossible Planet
Crazy
Gnarls Barkley
Someone save us all!!!
10th June 2006
The Satan Pit
I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)
Sandi Thom
Thank you Sandi!! What a nice song as well. Not sure the Beast is a punk rocker!!
17th June 2006
Love & Monsters
Maneater
Nelly Furtado
How is this fair? Gnarls was top for the majority of this series and Sandi only gets one week with her fun little song. Still, at least there is some movement. Jackie Tyler was also being a bit of a maneater in this episode, the saucy minx!
24th June 2006
Fear Her
Maneater
Nelly Furtado
Nelly holds on, which is more than can be said for that bloke carrying the Olympic torch!
1st July 2006
Army of Ghosts
Maneater
Nelly Furtado
Only three number ones all series?
8th July 2006
Doomsday
Hips Don't Lie
Shakira Ft. Wyclef Jean
Ah, a banger!! Double banger if you count the episode. Big fan of both of these. It seems to jaunty over the loss of Rose though.
Stay tuned for series 3 and 4 next week! It would be rude of me not to put in a bonus track to mark a new era of Doctor Who wouldn't it? Enjoy Rose Tyler before she was Rose Tyler!
