As is always the case with my lists, they mean absolutely nothing. I just enjoy making a list. I doubt anyone out there cares about this apart from me. Just in case though, here are some of my findings about the Doctor Who chart toppers from 2005 on.
Top Performing Artists
Adele spent nine weeks at the top of the charts, Rihanna and Gnarls Barkley eight each thanks mainly to massive hits Umbrella and Crazy.
Out in front by a country mile though is Justin Bieber. He spent fifteen weeks at the top, with an impressive five songs during the reign of the Twelfth Doctor.
Vibes
An all important question, how were we all vibing when each series broadcast. Does this give a snapshot of the mood of the country at the time? Who knows.
Series 1 - The vibe was charity! Seven weeks of the thirteen we were on the way to Amarillo on behalf of raising money for Comic Relief. Another three of the weeks we were hit with an additional novelty song, although this time it wasn't for charity - it was Crazy Frog. So ten weeks shared between Peter Kay and a frog on a motorbike. Read into that what you will about 2005!!
Series 2 - Our jam in 2006 was hip-hop! Mainly down to eight weeks of that god awful Gnarls Barkley song.
Series 3 - Vibes were still hip-hop in 2007! Nine of the thirteen weeks were hip-hop based, Beyonce, Rihanna, Timbaland.
Series 4 - varied vibes for the Tenth Doctors last series. Four weeks of pop, three of R&B, couple of weeks of hip-hop and a couple of dance as well. Does that count as varied vibes or no vibes?
Series 5 - Grime and Pop were the winners with three weeks each. The vibing was a lot more erratic than the first few series. We even had two weeks of James bloody Corden pretending he is the biggest and best football fan in the world. Sigh!
Series 6 - Murray Gold going big on the soundtrack this series. The young Doctor had a pop/dance vibe to the chart toppers during this series with LMFAO spending four weeks at the top. I am going to dedicate series 6 to fun vibes.
Series 7 - Pop vibes leading the way here. Little Mix, PJ & Duncan, The Saturdays.
Series 8 - Did a grumpier Doctor affect our musical vibes? No, not really. Dance and Pop remained kings during this series, aided greatly by Meghan Trainor's Bass!!
Series 9 - I can only put the Twelfth Doctor's era down to one vibe only, and that is the vibe of the Bieber. Three number ones during series 9 spanning seven weeks, not even Adele could stop the Belieber juggernaut!
Series 10 - Biebs wasn't done with Twelve yet, Despacito dominated the duration of series 10 and he also threw in I'm the One for good measure. Total Bieber dominance!
Series 11 - The first female Doctor was quite correctly joined by a female dominated charts. We had Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga spending most of series 11 run at the top.
Series 12 - The female domination was over, maybe that is linked to Missy becoming the Master again? Who knows!! Eminem and Stormzy made rap king for series 12.
Series 13 - It was just Adele singing Easy on Me. Nothing more, nothing less.
Series 14 (1) - Very similar to The Flux, much of this series was dominated by one artist and it was Sabrina Carpenter vibes, first off with four weeks of Espresso, broken up with two weeks of Eminem and then another week of Sabrina and Please Please Please.
Christmas Number Ones
Before Doctor Who became the main event on Christmas Day I used to listen to the top 40 on the radio, hoping to hear my favourite song of that years season top of the pile.
So what has topped the festive charts since 2005? There have been fourteen Christmas specials to date, The Church on Ruby Road having the most retro feel to proceedings with Wham's Last Christmas holding top spot.
Unsurprisingly, and rather disappointingly, 50% of the Christmas number ones have been from X Factor contestants. Doctor Who kick started itself the same year Shayne Ward won the second ever X Factor - do you remember the Shayne Ward greatest hits poster in one of the episodes? Other than X Factor we have had two choirs - Military Wives and NHS, another charity song raising funds for the Justice for the Hillsborough victims, one Ed Sheeran, a slightly odd choice in Rockabye by Clean Bandit (obviously everyone had given up on Christmas number ones by then) and a fightback by the public with Rage Against the Machine in 2009.
To add some context the number ones before Doctor Who returned were varied. There was a hint of what was to come with some Pop Idol winners though. Topping the charts in the years before were the Spice Girls, Westlife, Bob the Builder, Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman, Girls Aloud, Michael Andrews and Gary Jules and Band Aid 20.
Conclusion
Ah, I never really had a point for this, I just kind of did it. Draw your own conclusions I guess. I can't do all the work for you can I?
