Doctor What If...? Episode Two: Frozen #DWFanFic

Updated: 4 days ago

The Doctor and Yaz holding hands with Olaf by them laughing. TARDIS behind them and it is snowing

Yaz stood at the console, gazing up at the glowing time rotor, the tall, crystalline pillars towering above like ancient guardians watching over her. She glanced across the console at the Doctor, who was tinkering with a gadget, her blonde hair sticking out from beneath a pair of oversized goggles.

“What do you fancy today, fam?” the Doctor called out, not looking up from the device in her hands.

Yaz’s shoulders slumped. How does she still forget? Ryan and Graham were long gone. It was just the two of them now, but the Doctor seemed stuck in the past. Ironic really, if you think about it.

She forced a smile, hoping to mask the sting of being overlooked. “Doctor… take me on a date,” she said, her voice tentative, hoping it sounded like a joke, even though it was anything but.

The Doctor finally looked up, pulling her goggles to rest on top of her head, a face a mix of confusion and curiosity. “Really?” she asked, sounding almost bemused.

“Yes, really.” Yaz nodded, trying to keep her voice steady.

A slow smile spread across the Doctor’s face, her eyes lighting up with mischief. “Yasmin Khan, I know just the place.” She ran to the console and yanked down a lever with the excitement of a child. The lever that always led to adventures and monsters, not dates.

The TARDIS engines groaned to life, flinging Yaz across the room. She caught herself on the edge of the console, her heart racing with the hope that, just this once, they might get some uninterrupted time together.

When the engines finally stilled, the Doctor grinned and tossed her goggles aside. “You’re going to love this, Yaz. Arendelle, the coronation of Princess Elsa. Met her granddad once. Not the nicest chap, bit of a backstabber.”

Yaz joined the Doctor at the TARDIS doors, her curiosity piqued despite herself. The Doctor flung the doors open, revealing a picturesque castle surrounded by bustling market stalls. The warm sun bathed the scene in a golden glow, and the sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air.

Yaz closed her eyes for a moment, letting the warmth wash over her. I’ll never tire of this she thought to herself. Never.

“No time to waste! Let’s go!” The Doctor’s voice shattered her thoughts as she bounded into the crowd, leaving Yaz to follow.

The streets of Arendelle were alive with excitement. Grand timber-framed houses lined the cobbled roads, their quaintness somehow enhanced by the looming presence of the castle. In some places it might have looked obscene, but here it worked, everything working as one, big and small, rich and poor. A man cutting blocks of ice caught Yaz’s eye, and she smirked as she noticed him talking to his reindeer, unaware she could hear him.

The Doctor led her toward the castle, and as they stepped into its shadow, the air cooled. Yaz hesitated, her heart racing. She reached out, their fingers brushing together, and a spark shot through her as the Doctor took her hand. The moment was interrupted by a young woman with strawberry blonde hair dashing past them.

“Oh, sorry! So sorry!” she called out behind her as she almost tripped as she disappeared into the crowd.

At the castle gates, the Doctor produced her psychic paper, flashing it at a bewildered guard. “Doctor. Party planner extraordinaire. This is Yaz. Don’t worry, you won’t even know we’re here.”

The pair giggled as they wandered through the gates past the still confused guard. Inside, they found themselves at a table overflowing with chocolate. The Doctor, with her usual enthusiasm, grabbed a chocolate finger and popped it into Yaz’s mouth. “The main hall is over there. I need to get us a good seat.”

As the Doctor disappeared into the crowd licking her fingers clean of melted chocolate, Yaz was left at the table and she took the opportunity to savour the moment. Casting her eyes over the tables she saw more chocolate than she had ever seen before. She munched on a chocolate chip cookie as she turned her attention to the activity in the courtyard. This place is beautiful she wondered to herself. An excitable voice snapped her out of her thoughts. It was the young woman from earlier, now close enough for Yaz to notice the white streak in her hair. “Please, have as many as you like! Just save one for me. I love chocolate.”

Yaz smiled at her, but before she could reply, the woman skipped away, her energy contagious. As the woman walked one way the Doctor walked past her the other, returning to Yaz slightly flustered. “Slight issue. We missed the coronation, but that’s the boring part, right? The ball is where the fun is. Fancy a dance?”

Yaz’s heart skipped a beat. “Will you dance with me, Doctor?”

“Of course!” The Doctor extended her hand, and Yaz took it, feeling the warmth of the Doctor’s touch spread through her. “Strictly winner, 2092 here. Beat the guy from Corrie who married two robots in the final.” the Doctor said smugly.

In the grand hall, sunlight streamed through enormous windows, illuminating tapestries and suits of armour that lined the walls. An orchestra played a beautiful melody as couples danced gracefully. The Doctor placed a hand on Yaz’s waist and took her other hand, leading her in a waltz.

Yaz’s world narrowed to the Doctor, her touch, the heat of her body and the music that seemed to carry them both across the floor. “This is perfect,” Yaz whispered.

The Doctor smiled, leaning closer. “Thank you.”

“Over there” the Doctor whispered into Yaz’s ear “that’s Elsa and Anna, aren’t they pretty?”

“Who are they?” Yaz whispered back in no mood for a conversation.

“Who are they? Only the two main people in this room Yaz. Elsa is the Princess, well technically she is the Queen now, and Anna is her sister.” the Doctor said, her warm breath on Yaz’s ear. The Doctor spun Yaz around and took her back in her arms like an expert.

Yaz looked over the Doctor’s shoulder as she continued to waltz around the hall. The sisters were animated as they spoke now. Were they arguing? She twisted her head and looked at the Doctor then slightly lowered her hand down the Doctor’s side. As she did the orchestra stopped, Yaz cursed them as they rustled their papers in preparation for their next piece. The Doctor broke away from Yaz.

“How’s this for a date?” the Doctor said smiling.

“Amazing!” Yaz replied as she reached out and held both the Doctor’s hands, staring into her eyes as the music began again. The Doctor tightened her grip.

Yaz’s heart raced as she lent towards the Doctor, their lips almost touching, but just as they were about to kiss, a loud CRACK echoed through the hall. Yaz flinched as shards of ice shot from the floor, forming a jagged barrier around the new Queen Elsa, separating her from her sister Anna.

The Doctor immediately broke away, rushing toward Anna, with Yaz following close behind. But Anna was already gone, chasing after Elsa, leaving the Doctor and Yaz to navigate the chaos that followed.

The Doctor pulled Yaz in the opposite direction of the crowd, using her sonic screwdriver to slip out a side entrance of the hall and out into the kingdom. They watched as Elsa stepped on to the fjord and seemingly stood on top of the water. As the newly crowned Queen backed away from the baying crowd the water turned to a bright blue sheet of ice with each step she took. She looked so frightened as she turned away and ran. She didn't look back, racing away towards the mountains in the distance, leaving a sheet of ice in her wake.

Snow began to swirl in the air, and darkness fell. A small bespectacled man started to shout at Anna, accusing her of sorcery. The Doctor and Yaz pushed their way through the stunned villagers, the Doctor furiously waving to try and get Anna’s attention. They finally got to the front, but they were too late again, watching helplessly as Anna lept on top of a horse and rode off into the distance across the frozen water.

The storm intensified, and the temperature plummeted. Snow swirled around them, obscuring their vision. “Some date this is turning out to be,” Yaz muttered, her breath visible in the freezing air.

“Let it go, Yaz,” the Doctor said, more sharply than intended. She quickly recovered, leading them back to the TARDIS.

“Yoo-hoo! Big summer blowout!”

A bell tinkled above their heads as they stepped into the warmth of a log cabin. Yaz rubbed her hands together and attempted to blow hot breath onto her hands.

A large man loomed over his desk, he reached down, plonking a bottle on top of it. He had the biggest sideburns Yaz had ever seen, and she’d been back to the 70’s a fair few times.

“Suntan lotion? Massage Oil? Clogs? You look good in bikini yah?”

Oh she definitely would, Yaz thought.

The Doctor waved her hand dismissing the man as Yaz’s mind wandered to beaches and bikinis.

“This is an emergency, have you seen one of the princesses?” the Doctor asked as the man rummaged around below his desk. He raised his head back up, holding a pair of bikini bottoms against his large frame, they looked tiny against his ample midriff.

“Yah, Princess Anna was here, she buy carrots for her friend, now you buy bikini?” The man dangled the bikini in his huge hand.

“Where is she now?” the Doctor replied.

The man pointed, his eyes still on the Doctor, the tiny bikini bottoms swinging between his sausage like fingers. She turned to the direction he was pointing in then held out her hand, the man gently placed the bikini into her open palm. Yaz smirked as they headed back out into the biting cold and headed towards the barn in the direction they had just been led.

“Hygge, I add to your tab Doctor, bye-bye.”

“Wait, you know him?” Yaz asked, but it was too late, the cold from the outside hit Yaz in the face as the Doctor marched out the door.

Their feet crunched in the snow as they approached the barn. The cold bit through Yaz’s body but she was still enchanted by the beauty around her. Towering snow capped mountains directly in front with a forest stretching as far as her eyes could see around her, tall trees with branches drooping to the weight of freshly fallen snow.

Behind them the cabin looked even cosier from the outside, its sturdy logs intricately decorated, a plume of smoke curling out of the chimney. Dagger like icicles dropped their icy cold water onto the front porch. To the right of the cabin a small shed glowed, there was no snow on top of this building, and a window on the front door revealed it was a sauna, two small children waved at Yaz through the window and a slightly bewildered Yaz waved back.

The air was crisp and still but for a faint breeze which brought with it the scent of pine and smoke. Yaz continued to wade through the snow towards the barn. Just outside the barn was a snowman, the children in the sauna must have made that Yaz thought to herself smiling. Even in all this trouble people can still have fun.

“It is so beautiful!” Yaz explained as she stopped for a second to take it all in.

“It really is.” the Doctor said, stopping by her side and placing an arm around Yaz’s waist. The pair stood in silence, their icy breath steaming in front of them as Yaz returned the favour, wrapping an arm around the Doctor. They held onto each other and admired their surroundings.

“Hello, I'm Olaf, and I like warm hugs.” said an enthusiastic voice puncturing the serene silence.

Yaz jumped, their moment of peace as fleeting as ever. The snowman waddled towards them.

“Oh brilliant, hello” the Doctor said as she extravagantly scanned the smiling snowman with her screwdriver, squinting as she surveyed the readings with a curious look in her eyes. “Fascinating! You’re alive…truly alive!”

“Yep” the snowman said, a wide toothy grin filling his face. “I’m Olaf and I like warm hugs. Oh I already said that didn’t I?”

The Doctor chuckled. “I’ve met snowmen before, but none as cheerful as you. They were alive, just like you. Actually, they ate people. Scrap that. They were nothing like you.”

The snowman stared up at the Doctor, his eyes wide and full of wonder, hanging on to every word she was saying. That must be how I look every time the Doctor talks, Yaz thought.

“Are you alright?” the Doctor repeated.

“Oh, me, sorry, yes, I’m wonderful.” Olaf said as his body left his snowball feet as he bounced up and down with excitement.

Yaz had seen many things with the Doctor, but this was a new one. She mirrored Olaf’s grin as she watched the Time Lord and snowman talk.

“We are looking for someone, a red haired lady, did you see her?” the Doctor asked.

“Ohhhh red hair, like the sun, I love the sun. Sometimes I like to close my eyes and imagine what it would be like when sum…!”

“Olaf!” the Doctor cut in, stopping the snowman from breaking into song “where did the lady go?”

Olaf looked towards the kingdom and then to the mountains. He giggled, raising his stick hands to his mouth.

“Did they head East or West? High or low? It is like one of the great mysteries of life.” he said, still chuckling.

“You don’t know, do you?” Yaz asked, trying to hide the disappointment in her voice but still smiling at the energetic snowman.

“Nope! But one day I will know all of life's great mysteries” Olaf replied.

“We need to get going, will you be alright here?” the Doctor said, quickly glancing at her screwdriver again.

“Oh I am going to explore, I have so much to learn.” Olaf said as he gazed at the Frosted Willow trees. He ran his sticks through the drooping branches, ice particles that looked like pretty bells you would decorate a Christmas Tree with tinkled as they gently swayed with his touch.

“Now that’s what I call a mantra!” the Doctor said smiling.

“Samantha?”

“No, a mantra. Never mind. Thank you Olaf, I hope we get to see you again, oh and do me a favour will you? Find yourself a nose, a carrot always works for me!” the Doctor nodded to the TARDIS as she spoke.

The Doctor trudged past Yaz, wading her way through the snow. Yaz followed, trying her best to catch the Doctor up.

The pair were unaware that the snowman was now skipping into the forest having just heard something and was on his way to investigate.

“I never knew winter could be so beautiful.” Anna said to Kristoff.

Back in the warmth of the TARDIS the Doctor and Yaz removed their boots and sodden socks. The Doctor sighed, frustrated they hadn’t been able to find either Anna or Elsa. Yaz sat beside the Doctor and forced her frosty toes to move, eventually feeling them tingle as they began to thaw, she wriggled them. The Doctor frowned, staring at Yaz’s feet then at her screwdriver.

““Doctor, what do we do now?” Yaz asked, still trying to commute frozen kingdoms, saunas and a talking snowman in her brain.

The Doctor hesitated, her expression unusually sombre. “This cold… it’s not just weather. It’s powered by magic. Magic born from love. I can’t interfere, Yaz. Love like this… it’s too strong. If I get involved, I might ruin everything.”

Yaz’s heart ached as she watched the Doctor struggle with her own emotions. She wanted to reach out, to comfort her, but she wasn’t sure how. Instead, she whispered, “I love you, Doctor. I always will.”

The Doctor looked at Yaz, her eyes softening. “Yaz… you’re the best person I’ve ever met.” She reached out, taking Yaz’s hand in hers, their fingers intertwining.

“We never give up though Doctor?” Yaz asked a little hopelessly.

“I’m not giving up Yaz!” the Doctor fired back, her eyes now firmly on the floor, or were they on Yaz’s feet, she couldn’t tell. “This snow, this ice, it is powered by magic. Olaf is magic, everything around us is magic. It is more than that though, there is a love so deep running through the ice, it is so strong. Don’t you see Yaz? Love. How can I compete with love? Everything I love dies and fades away. I cannot get involved, I will break it, or spoil it, or make it die!”

Yaz felt her stomach churning. Her eyes joined the floor like the Doctors. Of course she was looking at the floor. She had no interest in any part of Yaz.

Yaz slowly placed a hand on the Doctor's thigh. The material of her trousers still felt cold, she gently squeezed.

“There’s one thing we can do,” the Doctor said suddenly, standing up with renewed energy causing Yaz’s hand to flop to the floor. “But after that, I promise we’ll finish that date.”

Yaz smiled despite herself, her heart lifting at the Doctor’s words.

“I noticed a few things on Olaf.” the Doctor continued as she walked to the console. She reached into her pocket pulling out a pair of socks. “Get your socks Yaz, you've pulled” she chucked them at her then set the TARDIS into motion again.

Yaz yanked on her socks as the Doctor marched to the door, somehow her feet were fully booted up again after the second long journey.

“Love Yaz!” the Doctor said loudly, raising her arms high to add to the drama. “Love will save the day, love and a carrot!”

“A carrot?” Yaz asked as she struggled to slip on her boots, half an eye on yanking them up and another half an eye on the Doctor opening the doors.

“Wait five minutes, then meet me back at the castle.” the Doctor beamed, ignoring the debate over the carrot. She stepped out into the cold as Yaz tried to reply, and then she was gone and Yaz was alone.

Why do you always leave me Doctor? Why don't you trust me? Yaz’s mind raced with desperate thoughts. But she obeyed the Doctor as always, and sat alone in the TARDIS with her thoughts, anxiously looking at her watch waiting for five minutes to disappear. All this time in a time machine, why did she still have to wait?

The Doctor raised a hand in front of her face as she emerged from the TARDIS. Her hand offering little protection from the icy snow now beating down, each snowflake sending a chill through her as they hit her skin.

The Doctor closed her eyes, memories flashing in front of her eyelids. If she had planned it right then Olaf would have got himself a carrot for a nose. That carrot would then be used to unlock Anna from the room she had been held captive in.

She opened her eyes again. The sky darkened further as the storm intensified, she could see nothing in front of her. Where are they she thought? Come on Olaf! Please have done what I think you'll have done.

She looked up, the snow had stopped falling. No that wasn't right, the snow was frozen in mid air. The storm had been paused. This allowed the Doctor to hear shouting in the distance, she could now see Elsa way ahead in the distance, her beautiful blonde hair almost like a beacon, standing out against the white and and black of the storm. The Doctor could also see the glint of something metal raised high above a man's head, a sword ready to strike Elsa. They were too far away to reach in time so she stood frozen to the spot watching and hoping she was right. Love and a carrot, please be right.

The sword descended towards Elsa but there she was. Olaf had released Anna with his carrot. Phew! Now for the love part the Doctor thought smiling to herself, tears filling her eyes as she saw Anna make the ultimate sacrifice to save her sister.

Using the last of her strength Anna lept in front of the blade, a flash of pure white light filled the air as the princess stood frozen, blocking the sword and sending the man flying backwards across the ice. A look of bemusement and anger in his face as he tried to scramble back to his feet.

The Doctor watched in awe as first Anna defrosted and then as the two sisters embraced. “Love, Yaz. It’s always love.” she muttered to herself as the storm began to thaw. Spears of sun rays blasted through the cracks in the clouds. The Doctor placed her hands on her hips and watched the two women. Anna had saved Elsa, and in doing so she had saved her entire kingdom. This was a good day.

The Doctor didn’t notice the soldiers approaching her from behind, their footsteps soft on the cracking ice. The Doctor let out a grunt as she was tackled from behind, but she remained smiling into the melting ice as her hands were bound behind her back.

Yaz, who was completely oblivious to what had unfolded on the fjord, had finally got her socks and boots on. She was standing at the doors to the TARDIS watching the hands on her watch slowly ticking round. Four minutes and fifty-seven seconds had passed, fifty-eight, fifty-nine. Finally! She rushed out the door but was taken aback by the burst of sunlight that hit her.

Her eyes began to adjust as she surveyed the area looking for the Doctor. She looked behind her to see that the TARDIS was parked on the very edge of the fjord. The fjord's water was now rippling with life, no longer a sheet of ice. The TARDIS itself was drenched with the remains of the melting of the brief winter.

The Doctor was nowhere to be seen. What had she done? Is she alright? Yaz was despondent as she trudged towards the castle.

The Doctor was shoved in a room and the door was slammed shut behind her. She heard keys jangling and then the clunk of the door being locked.

She looked around the room, her hearts full of joy from watching the love of Anna and Elsa, seeing how much two people could care for each other and the sacrifices that they had both made. The ceiling looked like it was defrosting, and the last embers of a fire flickered in the darkened room.

The Doctor pressed her face against the oak door, she heard a commotion outside and then everything went silent.

The Doctor muttered and grumbled under her breath as she rooted through her jacket pockets. She pulled out her sonic, nope that doesn’t work on wood, what else is in here? A banana? Nah. How about some spoons? I thought I had lost them.

The door slowly swung open causing the Doctor to step back. She poked her head out round the corner and heard a familiar giggle. I love that carrot she thought to herself as she stepped out of the room.

Meanwhile, Yaz sat glumly on the edge of a new party, watching the people of Arendelle celebrate a new chance of summer. She forced a smile as Anna (who was now the new Queen) waved at her from across the room before squeezing her sister (the old Queen) tightly. They were all so happy. She looked out across the kingdom bathed in sunlight, far in the distance her magic blue box stood, alone, melting ice dripping down the sides mirroring the tears snaking down her cheeks. Beyond the TARDIS a man was being shoved onto a boat as he struggled, protesting his innocence about something or other, Yaz didn't care what, she wanted to see the Doctor. What had she done? Where is she?

She didn't see at first, she missed the flash of blonde and rainbow, but there she was, the Doctor. Her hands were shoved in her pockets as she spoke to Olaf, a small cloud above his head sprinkling them with a flurry of snowflakes. The Doctor looked up and smiled across the room at Yaz.

The Doctor took her hands out of her pockets, dusted the delicate white crystals of snow from her shoulders and patted Olaf on the head before marching with purpose across the room towards Yaz.

Yaz opened her mouth to begin to ask what had happened but the Doctor surprised her by grabbing her hand.

“Some date, huh?” Yaz said, surprised at how hard the Doctor had started to pull her.

The Doctor turned to her, a playful grin on her face. “Not over yet. Shall we dance again, Yasmin Khan?”

Yaz laughed, feeling the warmth of the Doctor’s hand in hers as they turned away from the party. The Doctor kept pulling and tugging Yaz until she led them out of sight.

“What are you doing?” Yaz said breathlessly as the Doctor backed her up against the wall of the castle. The bricks were rough and scratched at her back. The Doctor didn’t reply, she just raised a hand and placed a finger on Yaz’s mouth. They stared at each other. Yaz trembled as the doctor ran her finger along her lips. The sounds of Arendelle drifted away and it felt like only her and the Doctor existed. The Doctor didn’t seem so awkward now.

The Doctor removed her finger and stepped forward, their bodies pressed together in the tight space the Doctor had pulled them into. One of the Time Lords' hands reached round the back of Yaz’s head, gently tugging her hair, then yanking her head towards hers. Yaz let out a whimper as fireworks exploded high in the sky above them as the Doctor’s lips smothered hers. They kissed. Not just any kiss, this kiss made Yaz’s heart boom as loud as the fireworks overhead. This kiss Yaz had yearned for so long. She wrapped her arms around the Doctor, their soft moist lips moving together, the Doctor's tongue toying with Yaz’s. The Doctor pulled away.

“Please don’t stop.” Yaz pleaded.

The Doctor smiled, her eyes looked at Yaz in a way she had never seen before. The Doctor never said another word, she just took Yaz’s hand and led her into the TARDIS, closing the door on the kingdom that had just been saved by love.

The Doctor and Yaz embrace outside the castle, ready to kiss as a happy Olaf looks on
